I am responsible for AsureQuality's Sales, Marketing and Customer Services activities. Married to Vicky, with two teenage children I enjoy spending time at the beach and have a strong interest in food, wine, travel and sport. |

![]() | I gained a D Phil degree, majoring in Physical Chemistry, from Waikato University in New Zealand in 1983. Since that time I have worked in forensic, environmental and food sciences, including periods in Australia and Japan. My activity is now principally business and relationship development for stakeholders and customers around the Pacific Rim at regulator, industry and consultant levels, with a primary focus on environmental concerns, food safety assurance and biosecurity. I also maintain a lead forensic scientist role within AsureQuality. My hobbies include food, bonsai, contemporary classical music, astronomy, pottery and yoga. |
Dr Robert (Bob) K. Symons - Technical Manager | |
![]() | I was appointed as Technical Manager – Dioxins, POPs and Residues on 1 May 2009, and have over 25 years' experience working as an environmental analytical chemist with experience in the analysis of trace organic contaminants. I have been working the field of dioxins since the early 1990s where I managed the Ultra-Trace™ laboratory in New Zealand’s Institute of Environmental Science & Research Limited and later for AgriQuality Limited from 1995 until 2001. I moved back to Australia and was part of the team that established Australia’s first laboratory analysing dioxins within the National Measurement Institute in Sydney. I have been a NATA (National Accreditation and Testing Authorities, Australia) technical assessor since 1985 and am a member of NATA’s Environmental Technical Group. My current research interests are the determination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in human, food and environmental samples and have been an author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications in this area. I am based in Sydney and my role is to market the specialist services in the area of POPs that AsureQuality has a proud heritage in, and which are contained within the legally-binding Stockholm Convention that governments around the world have signed. My clients range from Governments at the Federal and State levels, industry, food importers and exporters, environmental consultants, research organisations like CSIRO and universities. I am a keen surfer living within a few minutes of some of Sydney’s famous beaches and am interested in food and wine. I am also a novice practitioner of the art of bonsai. |
Ian Shaw - Business Development Manager | |
![]() | I am tertiary qualified with an extensive background in food quality and safety, food science, public health, environmental monitoring, health & safety, quality systems management, third party auditing and training. During my career I have held senior central and local government positions in public health and environmental health and have managed teams of food and health regulators. I have also owned and operated successful businesses such as a food business and an Asia-Pacific company that became a well-recognised service provider in HACCP – food safety, environmental health, resource management and monitoring, occupational health and safety, sale of liquor licensing, building compliance, laboratory testing of drinking water supplies, third party auditing of HACCP-based Food Safety Programmes, and ACC Heath and Safety Programmes. My hobbies and interests include family, music, walking, home renovations, cars and the arts. For a period of nine years I was a master craftsman in Pounamu/NZ Greenstone and opal work and spent some time as Treasurer of The Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust Board and Secretary of The Arts Centre of Christchurch Stallholders Committee. |
Bhanu (Barney) Lala - Account Manager, Laboratory | |
![]() | I started my working career with the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries (Dairy Division) in July 1974. I completed my NZCS in 1975 and two years later I was promoted to senior technician to manage the former 'Milkpowder Laboratory' with its 15 technicians. After eight years with the Dairy Division, I managed the Salmonella Laboratory for three years, and then the Chemistry Laboratory for nine years. From 1998 to the current time I have been an Account Manager for the former AgriQuality and now AsureQuality. I work with our laboratory customers throughout New Zealand. |
Andrew Mill - Account Manager, Horticulture & Food | |
![]() | I come from a practical orcharding background, having managed and owned an orchard in Wairarapa. Prior to establishing my own orchard I did the usual kiwi OE for a few years and worked at a number of mostly horticulture related jobs, including obtaining a Dip Hort and Dip Hort Mgt from Lincoln. I have been with the former AgriQuality and now AsureQuality for tene years, starting as a Field Officer with AgriQuality in Christchurch and then, after two years, moving into an Account Manager role looking after the South Island horticulture, seed and forestry related business. I moved to the Hawke's Bay with my family four years ago to be better placed for our horticultural customers and to set up a small retail business which my wife runs in Havelock North. My role has evolved into Industry Manager, Horticulture & Food, with responsibility for AsureQuality key horticultural and food customers and related industry bodies. I live in the sunny Hawke's Bay and have a houseful of girls with two daughters, a mainlander wife and a none too manly small white terrier dog. I try to keep fit by running, tennis and fishing when time permits. |
Barry Divehall - Account Manager, Dairy | |
![]() | My interest in dairying, as a career, stemmed from an up bringing on the family dairy situated in the Manawatu where I lived for 16 years. I joined the Manawatu Coop Dairy Company Limited situated at Longburn, just out of Palmerston North, as a dairy industry trainee cadet in 1970. During my time with the dairy company I gained manufacturing and management experience in the cream products department, milk powder, milk supply laboratory testing and boiler operations. I completed a diploma in Dairy Technology at Massey University in 1977. I continued working for the dairy company through to 1980 then joined the Ministry of Agriculture – Dairy Division as a dairy product grader situated at the Port of Tauranga. At that time the Ministry of Agriculture operated an export product grading facility and a significant laboratory operation. During a period of considerable change between 1984 and 1998 I remained with the Ministry of Agriculture which became the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and then progressed to MAF Quality Management. My responsibilities during this period were varied from being a dairy office to senior food quality consultant. In 1998 MAF Quality Management was restructured and AgriQuality was formed. I continued with AgriQuality as a Senior Food Quality Specialist primarily working within the New Zealand dairy industry and with some international customers as well. In 2006 I was appointed Account Manager presenting AgriQuality laboratory, on farm and certification services to our major dairy customers. With the formation of AsureQuality I have continued in the account management role evolving to the title of Industry Manager Dairy. My wife and I have been together for nearly 28 years and have two grown-up children. I am a very keen aviator having spent many years building and flying my own creation. |
Pat Turton - Business Development Manager, Farm & Livestock Services | |
![]() | I have come from a meat industry background where I was a meat inspector for 16 years before moving to manage the MAF Quality Management Lincoln Animal Health , Plant Protection and Food Laboratories in 1996. In 1998 I joined ASURE New Zealand Ltd as a Business Development Executive focused on growing contestable services along the supply chain. With the merger of ASURE and AgriQuality I have moved into a Business Development role in the primary production area with a focus on farm services and products. My key customers are spread across the meat, dairy, wool and pork industries with my areas of special interest centered around assurance systems. I live in Ashburton with my wife Kaye and three daughters. My main sporting interest revolves around coaching basketball and following my daughters sporting interests. |
Allen Fraser - Business Development Manager, Forestry | |
![]() | I originally trained as a Forest Ranger and was involved in all aspects of forestry from establishment through to harvesting of exotic forests in New Zealand, which included a brief period in tropical forestry. In 1982 I joined the Ministry of Forestry and was involved in import and export forestry quarantine as a Timber Inspector and progressed to managing national export inspection and certification activities. With the transfer of the export forestry inspection and certification activities to AgriQuality my role became that of Forestry Business Manager looking after all forestry activities through out NZ. I am now the Business Development Manager for AsureQuality. My responsibilities include working with the Forest Industry to provide certification and other services to help companies meet compliance requirements. |
MarketingKathryn Sim - Marketing Communications Manager | |
![]() | I started my working days as a registered nurse - a great way to see the world and always be sure of getting work! Over a decade ago I decided to retrain, and following a degree in communication I have worked in corporate communications for Fletcher Building, social marketing for the Minstry of Agriculture and Forestry, public relations for a consultancy, and event management and website development for an economic development agency. I have been in my current role at AsureQuality for three and a half years and during this time have done post graduate study in eMarketing to further my knowledge in this area. My responsibilities include developing marketing projects for the businesses, eMarketing - including the company websites, email marketing and search engine marketing, the Annual Report, corporate clothing, media relations and marketing documents such as the Company Profile and DVD. I have a great team in Anne Hjorth (Graphic Designer & Brand Champion) and Sandra Sames (Marketing Projects) who help make all this happen. My husband Gary and I live with our three children on a lifestyle block in Karaka which keeps us very busy. I also enjoy body combat, reading, travelling and socialising and am a member of the Board of Trustees at my children's school. |

![]() | I joined AsureQuality in 2002 and have worked as part of the Laboratory Services team with roles in New Zealand and Australia. I was appointed to the position of Customer Services Manager at the conclusion of my Masters of Arts with First Class Honors qualification in February 2009. I am responsible for managing the Customer Services team. As a part of the wider Business Development team, Customer Services provides support to all AsureQuality business units, and operates our New Zealand and Australian free phone services. We have recently moved to implement outbound calling initiatives to gain feedback and suggestions from our existing customers. Our two Customer Service Project Champions work to turn this feedback into research and development opportunities to ensure that AsureQuality's service provision is always on the pulse of industry requirements. In my spare time I am working on a PhD proposal in my area of specialty; youth media. I play trumpet in the Manukau City Concert Band, play social soccer, and am a fan of the NZ Breakers. |
